    Global concern about the potential for pandemic avian influenza is rooted in the pathogenicity of avian influenza virus strains in humans and the lack of immunity to these highly mutable viruses in the general population. Dr. Alan Sanders provides timely, practical advice on how to improve clinical awareness and implement strategies for diagnosing, treating, and preventing avian influenza.

NLM Mobile

The National Library of Medicine has collected a number of resources for handheld devices on the PubMed sidebar. The NLM Mobile link connects the user to:
  • PubMed for Mobiles, with text-only search options for any handheld web browser
  • Downloadable books from the NCBI Bookshelf using the free MobiPocket Reader
  • MD on Tap for Palm or Pocket PC
  • Wireless System for Emergency Responders (WISER) for Palm or Pocket PC

Gale Virtual Reference Library Online

Michigan eLibrary's online Internet subscriptions now include several titles from the Gale Virtual Reference Library. This encyclopedia collection may be used at any Saint Mary's workstation. Michigan residents may also use the Virtual Reference Library at home using their Michigan driver's license or state ID number, through MeL.org.

Telecourse: Assisting patients who need lifestyle changes

This 60-minute video discusses nonpharmacologic approaches to slowing disease progression and improving the quality of life of patients with chronic disease, focusing on education and counseling to help patients improve diet and nutrition, increase physical activity, and enhance problem-solving and coping skills.

The program, released on August 8, is now available in both DVD and videocassette formats in the Health Sciences Library.

Library Catalog Up & Running

Our year-long project of developing an online catalog of library materials is nearing completion. The Health Sciences Library Catalog lists books, journals and audiovisuals available in Saint Mary's Health Sciences Library. In addition, the catalog includes links to selected health-related texts through the STAT!Ref and NetLibrary ebook collections. All Internet-linked workstations in Saint Mary's computer network are authorized to use these ebook collections.

Free MEDLINE for PDA

The National Library of Medicine's MD on Tap (MDoT) application, previously called PubMed on Tap, retrieves MEDLINE citations on PDAs and SmartPhones with wireless Internet connections and the Palm OS. A Pocket PC client is in development.

STAT!Ref Has a New Look

STAT!Ref includes the complete text of more than 60 medical and nursing textbooks. A recent update to STAT!Ref's search screens makes it even easier to find and identify the book sections most relevant to your clinical questions.

A link to the STAT!Ref online book collection can be found on the Health Sciences Library's intranet page, available at any Saint Mary's workstation. For off-campus use, ask a librarian for a password.
