Gale Virtual Reference Library Online

Michigan eLibrary's online Internet subscriptions now include several titles from the Gale Virtual Reference Library. This encyclopedia collection may be used at any Saint Mary's workstation. Michigan residents may also use the Virtual Reference Library at home using their Michigan driver's license or state ID number, through MeL.org.

Telecourse: Assisting patients who need lifestyle changes

This 60-minute video discusses nonpharmacologic approaches to slowing disease progression and improving the quality of life of patients with chronic disease, focusing on education and counseling to help patients improve diet and nutrition, increase physical activity, and enhance problem-solving and coping skills.

The program, released on August 8, is now available in both DVD and videocassette formats in the Health Sciences Library.

Library Catalog Up & Running

Our year-long project of developing an online catalog of library materials is nearing completion. The Health Sciences Library Catalog lists books, journals and audiovisuals available in Saint Mary's Health Sciences Library. In addition, the catalog includes links to selected health-related texts through the STAT!Ref and NetLibrary ebook collections. All Internet-linked workstations in Saint Mary's computer network are authorized to use these ebook collections.

This Week in the New England Journal...

The Perspectives section of the August 4, 2005 New England Journal of Medicine presents discussions of the ethics, risks and benefits of organ donation by living donors as well as the controversy surrounding public solicitation of organ donation. Visit the NEJM Website for abstracts, extracts, and an audio interview of article authors from the latest Journal issue. Health Sciences Library workstations are authorized to access full-text articles and other licensed features.

Dr. William Matory interviews Dr. Edmund Pellegrino,a world-renowned spokesman on ethics and the medical profession, in this 60-minute video. Dr. Pellegrino addresses end-of-life and other difficult decisions faced when caring for patients, and provides clinically and morally sound advice based on his belief in the moral nature of medicine.
