More New Online Journals

Two additional journals have come online from Sage Publications:

Journal of Intensive Care Medicine offers medical and surgical clinicians in adult and pediatric intensive care access to state-of-the-art, broad-based analytic reviews and updates, original articles, reports of large clinical series, techniques and procedures, topic-specific electronic resources, book reviews, and editorials on all aspects of intensive/critical/ coronary care. The journal also discusses the essential principles, protocols, clinical presentations, guidelines, indications, contraindications, complications, necessary equipment, priorities, ethical and legal issues, changes, and recommendations for ongoing care for every aspect of ICU patient care.

For over 20 years, the Journal of Holistic Nursing has been a pioneering force in integrating holistic health concepts with traditional Western medicine. The peer-reviewed journal promotes holism—a state of harmony among body, mind, emotions, and spirit —and nursing’s function within that ever-changing environment. This objective forum allows caring and innovative nurses in clinical practice, research, individual wellness practice, and academia to exchange critical information, share clinical and personal experiences, and communicate research pertaining to nursing practice, health care, wellness, healing, and human potential. Each issue contains Applied Concepts of Holistic Nursing and Continuing Education Opportunities that can lead to CE credits. New Journals Online

Two of our subscription journals have just begun offering online access:

• American Journal of Hospice & Palliative Care Medicine offers physicians, nurses, psychologists/psychiatrists, pastoral care professionals, hospice administrators, and related health care professionals high-quality, practical, and multidisciplinary information on the medical, administrative, and psychosocial aspects of hospice and palliative care.
  


• Clinical Pediatrics features original articles containing innovative clinical research on diagnosis, management, and health care delivery; review articles on critical topics, with an emphasis on the basic science foundation of clinical practice; brief reports on specific clinical and diagnostic insights; resident rounds, commentaries from noted scholars,

Natural Standard: a New Resource for Alternative & Complementary Therapies

Natural Standard provides high quality, evidence-based information about complementary and alternative therapies. For each therapy covered by Natural Standard, a research team systematically gathers scientific data and expert opinions. Validated rating scales are used to evaluate the quality of available evidence. Information is incorporated into comprehensive monographs which are designed to facilitate clinical decision making. All monographs undergo blinded editorial and peer review prior to inclusion in Natural Standard databases.

Journal Websites: More than "Online Journals"

We're seeing a trend among medical journal publishers to add interactive features and online-only content to their websites. This includes blogs, webcasts, PowerPoint and Flash slideshows, podcasts or other audio features, and "e-publication" -- articles that are not included in the paper edition of the journal. Most journal sites also offer "e-alerts," by which tables of contents are delivered through e-mail or RSS.

New Service! A-to-Z for Online Journal Access

More than 8,300 electronic journals and magazines are now available at our desktops. This number includes our subscriptions, medical titles available free on the Internet, and databases provided by the Library of Michigan. Professional journals in medicine and the health sciences are included, as are many consumer health and general-interest titles.

A-to-Z is an easy-to-use service listing all of the electronic journals available at Saint Mary's. Simply type one or more words from a journal or book title in A-to-Z's search box to pull up a list. Each A-to-Z entry will offer a link to the online journal or to the database where the full text of articles from the journal can be found. The entry will also indicate the years for which full text articles are provided, as well as any login IDs or passwords that may be required.
A-to-Z also includes links to many free medical textbooks as well as our STAT!Ref medical ebook collection.

A New Look for CINAHL

CINAHL, the Nursing and Allied Health Literature database, has a new publisher and a new look. The new interface includes such user-friendly features as:

• a checkbox for limiting results to research articles
• a "suggest subject headings" checkbox
• dropdown boxes for selecting languages, publication date ranges, or journal types
• bibliographic format options including APA and MLA

Telecourse: Adverse Childhood Experiences and their Relationship to Adult Health and Wellbeing

Recent studies have shown that adults who have experienced multiple adverse childhood events such as abuse and neglect are at an increased risk for the development of diseases as adults, including ischemic heart disease, cancer, chronic lung disease, skeletal fractures, and liver disease. Dr. Felitti explores the relationship of health risk behavior and disease to the breadth of exposure to childhood abuse and household dysfunction. Effective adult screening techniques are reviewed to help physicians recognize and manage the long-term medical impact of adverse childhood events. Strategies for recognizing, treating and preventing adverse events in children are also discussed.

This one-hour DVD is now available for check-out in the Health Sciences Library.

Library Web Page Revisions

Our web page has been revised to reflect changes in the way we access the Michigan eLibrary databases.

• Gale Virtual Reference Library and Health & Wellness Resource Center are now included in the GALE link.


• Michigan eLibrary will require a Michigan Driver's License or state ID number to log in.


• NetLibrary now requires either an individual login or a Michigan Driver's License number. Those with a Michigan Driver's License number can create their own individual logins. Please ask library staff if you need assistance with this process.

Telecourse: Peripheral Arterial Disease

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a highly prevalent disorder associated with significant cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, yet is underdiagnosed and undertreated in primary care practice. In this program, Dr. Alain Drooze explains how to easily apply new ACC/AHA guidelines for management of patients with PAD, reviewing differential diagnosis, risk reduction strategies, treatment of intermittent claudication, and when to refer a patient to a vascular specialist.
This 60-minute video course is now available in DVD and VHS formats in the Health Sciences Library.

Fibromyalgia: Putting Your Finger on the Diagnosis (NCME #858)
Dr. Jessica Berman demonstrates a focused, hands-on approach to diagnosing fibromyalgia that includes a physical exam to identify the 18 tender points, which are sensitive and specific to this chronic syndrome in 80% of cases. Once the diagnosis is made, a combination of medications and exercise can help patients with fibromyalgia reduce their symptoms, function better, and enjoy an improved quality of life.
